CPD for Counsellors
Basingstoke Counselling Service is committed to providing CPD for Counsellors, Psychotherapists and other health care professionals because continued professional development is key to the effectiveness of our work.
Why is CPD for counsellors so important?
Continuing Professional Development is an essential part of being a counsellor or psychotherapist. Every day we will encounter new people, different outlooks and hold space for a varying number of experiences and emotions.
Continuing to grow your knowledge of what it is to be human including addiction, trauma, the dynamics of couples, gender, race, or personality disorders ensures that you have the knowledge and ability to support a diverse range of clients.
Attending counselling CPD courses will help you to continue to practice safely and ethically and means that you’re prepared to deal with whatever shows up in the counselling room.
As such, CPD is the one thing that you can expect to remain constant throughout your career as a counsellor or therapist.
CPD for counsellors and psychotherapists – your obligations
If you’re a registered member of the BACP, UKCP, BABCP or another professional body, CPD is a requirement of your membership, normally with a minimum number of hours you must complete each year.
The British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) says you must:
- keep an up-to-date and accurate record of CPD activities within the Learning centre or using the BACP Register template
- record a range of CPD activities relevant to current or future practice
- show clearly how you have reflected, planned, actioned and evaluated your development needs and indicate how this will have an impact in your practice
- submit your CPD record for audit on request
Our CPD for counsellors programme
Because of the importance of continued professional development for counsellors and psychotherapists, our CPD programme is varied and ongoing – with dates being added throughout the year.
We run a variety of short courses, workshops and longer, in-depth training courses that offer you a place to learn, connect and exchange experiences – all of which are vital components to your CPD. These courses also provide a valuable break from the isolation of counselling work – which many of our attendees find invaluable.
You can view all our current counselling CPD courses by hitting the button below. All of our courses are available to book online.
Our CPD for counsellors programme consists of a mixture of online and in-person events, with most of our in-person events being run at weekends to allow for travel if you’re coming from further afield.
You can click on our 2024 courses below to find out more details on the syllabus, costs and how to book.

How our counselling CPD courses work
Before you register your place and pay your course fees, please check the eligibility requirements for each course. They are individual to the training that is being offered, so please check carefully to make sure you’re eligible. If you have any doubts about this, then send us an email at events@basingstokecounselling.org.uk and we’ll get back to you to clarify the requirements.
Each counselling CPD course will outline the times and dates you’re required to attend in order to receive your certificate of completion and contains information on cancellation procedures and refund policies.
We offer early bird discounts on most of our courses and, where possible, we offer the option to pay by instalments. If you’d like to chat to us about arranging instalments to make the cost of your CPD more manageable then please email our team at events@basingstokecounselling.org.uk who are more than happy to help arrange this with you.
There is a £25 admin fee for setting up the instalments as we do incur costs and unfortunately as a small charity we do need to pass this on.
You’ll receive an information pack for your chosen course approximately two weeks before your start date, including information on parking, directions, and online meet instructions if relevant.
Once you’ve completed your counselling CPD course with us and met the attendance requirements, you’ll receive a certificate of completion to keep safe in your CPD records.

Join our mailing list
The quickest way to get notified of our CPD opportunities is to join our mailing list. As soon as we have a new workshop or course available, you’ll be sent an email with all the details and the booking link. We often offer early bird discounts so being on our mailing list is a good way to be the first to hear about our courses and workshops and get a discount on your space.

About us
Basingstoke Counselling Service was founded in 1985 by a small group of local therapists wanting to provide mental health support to the local community. Since then, the Service has flourished to become a busy, vibrant counselling and training centre dedicated to improving the emotional wellbeing of our community.
We achieve this in two ways. Firstly, by offering affordable, professional counselling to those in need and secondly, by providing a range of training courses for those interested in supporting others with mental health difficulties.
