Advanced Courses

We understand that some subject areas require more in-depth learning, either to enhance your skills in your current practice or to enable you to work with different client groups. We therefore run a programme of longer training courses to complement our ‘A Day With……’ series.

Client Assessment Training (CAT)

In this climate of change, we are all facing the challenges which come with adapting our way of working with clients. In recognition of this, the course will explore these differences and look at how they impact the initial assessment process.

Whether you are an experienced counsellor or just starting out in private practice, this course provides an invaluable understanding of the assessment process.

The clients’ decision to seek therapy can be a momentous one, which makes that initial meeting so important. Assessment can be continuous and at times complex, requiring critical awareness and sensitivity. Sound assessment skills are therefore crucial to effective clinical practice.

This two-day course now takes place online via Zoom and has been designed to give sufficient time and focus to developing an understanding of the assessment process and its execution. Practitioners will examine the theory and practice of this process, developing skills in initial consultation techniques and report writing.

Day One: You will gain an understanding of what assessment is and indeed what it is not. You will explore a range of assessment skills including what to look out for in the initial consultation and how to structure it.

Day Two: Includes live supervision of clinical assessments presented by a few members of the group. You will all be able to engage fully in discussion and learning throughout the supervision process.

Course Leader: Joan Bristow MA MBACP (senior accredited), UKCP, BPC.
Joan draws on 20 years of professional experience in a wide range of settings. She is an accomplished therapist and supervisor of both groups and individuals. Joan has a keen interest in training, leading workshops and teaching on Certificate and Diploma Courses.

Certificate in Couples Counselling

We are delighted to announce that in 2022 Heidi Renton will be delivering our Certificate in Couples Counselling.

Heidi has worked hard to develop a new syllabus for our couples training, that remains experiential, underpinned by robust theory. This 50-hour training will be running over five weekends from March to July 2022. The course is open to qualified counsellors with a minimum of one-year post-qualifying counselling experience, who wish to add working with couples to their portfolio, or who are already working with couples and want to deepen their understanding of couples work.

Course attendees will benefit from Heidi’s extensive knowledge and experience of relationship therapy: she qualified for her Masters as a Psychodynamic Couple and Individual Psychotherapist at Tavistock Relationships in London and then specialised with a further qualification at the same institution, in Psychosexual and Relationship Therapy. She has since lectured and tutored on both the Tavistock courses from which she graduated, and works there as a Senior Clinician in Assessment and Relationship Psychotherapy, alongside running her own private practice. In addition, Heidi trains and supervises NHS and IAPT counsellors on the Tavistock’s Couple Therapy for Depression time-limited model.

If you have already attended our previous Couples Counselling Course, we encourage you to experience this exciting new training (and offer you a discount of 20% on both Early Bird and standard pricing).
